Take a seat at one of the antique style arm chairs and order some of the best fresh baked scones around or cucumber sandwiches with Twinings tea or tuck into some of the signature Welsh Rarebit.

Birkdale has become a de facto outreach of Britain since the start-up of this supplier of all things British, from foodstuffs to Manchester United jerseys to Beatrix Potter cuddly toys. Stock up from the shelves here and see the Olympics through with Stilton or Lancaster cheese and Bramston pickles, Wensley Pork pies and sausages or make your own Yorkshire pudding or gather a supply of twiglets, Yorkie bars, Brannigan's chips or digestives for late night Olympic viewing on TV.

Sibling and neighbour of Britain on the Bayside, Chumley Warner's is the authentic go-to British fish'n'chip shop for a fix of all the old faves. True to form most things on the menu are battered to within an inch of their lives, from the scampi, plaice and haddock to the Mars Bars, White/Black Puddings, sausages, mushrooms Farmhouse Baps and haggis. Throw in some curry or mint sauce, chips with vinegar, and some mushie peas and the Queen's your ruler.
Spice Avenue

Still in Britain by the bayside, Spice Avenue purports to the only curry house in Australia where the Balti style of cooking enjoyed en masse by the Brits is available. And it even has a sibling in Wolverhampton, UK to prove it. Meanwhile these thick creamy curries, cooked in a 'Balti' (wok-type pan) are beautifully flavoursome and go down particularly well with a pint of in-house lager.
O'Connor's Fish'n'Chips

Back in the pulse of Lutwyche Rd Windsor, Liz O'Connor and fiancé Chris keep the Brisbane's British and Irish fraternity well catered for with their eatery and takeaway tucked at the back of a cluster of shops. Not only is this a gem of a place for a traditional British, Scottish or Irish cooked breakfast but the menu runs the gamut of British & Irish tradition - potato skins loaded with taco mince and cheese, plaice, haddock or Nth Atlantic salmon and gravy or scampi and hand cut chips (to eat in or takeaway), bangers and mash, Irish stew with the standout a to-die-for Beef and Guinness pie. All go down well with their range of imported soft drinks such as Club Rock Shandy and Ben Shaw's Cream Soda. And as an Olympic Games special dish they're offering a generous serve of North Atlantic cod with hand cut chips and mushy peas for $15.90.

Up the road from O'Connor's Fish'n'Chips and also under the same ownership, Celtic Koala is a grocery with soon-to-be-completed deli where homesick expats get their share of goodies from home. Here's the place to stock up on pork pies, oxtail soup, porridge, soda bread, easy-make packets of Shepherd's pie, gammon steak, Cornish pasties, Cumberland or Lincolnshire sausages or snack on cheese and onion Taytos, Quavers and Eccles cakes.
Teddies'n'Sweets

Part tea room and part providore of English goodies and teddy bears, this quaint little tea shop looks as if it was jettisoned from an English seaside town to its home here in the retro Redcliffe arcade. Either drop in for a traditional Devonshire or High Tea or a hearty feed of full cooked English breakfast, lunch of lambs fry and bacon or Shepherd's pie followed by bread'n'butter pudding or apple/rhubarb crumble. Otherwise take away some of their plentiful provisions such as square sausages, steak and kidney pies, Scotch eggs, Bakewell tarts, Frys chocolates or Blackpool Rock.
