The Rugby League five eighth co-authored Deadly D and Justice Jones – Making the Team with primary school deputy principal Dave Hartley to take out the kuril dhagun prize in the State Library of Queensland’s 2013 black&write! Indigenous Writing Fellowships.
The children's book is set to be published in September.
Two fellowships were awarded along with the kuril dhagun. Each prize is worth $10,000 and includes a publishing deal with indigenous publishing house Magabala Books.
Deadly D and Justice Jones – Making the Team tells the story of a boy moving from far north Queensland to the city, chronicling his experiences as he adjusts to the new lifestyle.
Arts Minister Ian Walker said the prizes represented an exciting future for indigenous writing, editing and publishing in Australia.
“The 2013 competition revealed such an extraordinary depth of indigenous literary talent that an additional prize was added to the program," he said.
"All four winners are outstanding role models."
The fellowship winners are Townsville comedian Tristan Savage with his science fiction adventure Rift Breaker and South Australian lecturer Jared Thomas for his young adult novel Calypso Summer.
Entries for the 2014 competition open in October.
