Under-14 and under-16 representative sides will take-on a Southern Outback team in the Australian Rugby League Development Queensland Outback Junior Challenge to determine selection for the Queensland Outback squad.
At this early stage the squads are broad, but both teams will eventually be cut down to 18 players each.
Queensland Rugby League game development officer for Mount Isa Scott Kyle said the region was blessed with many talented players.
"Halfback Shaun Booth in my opinion is the smartest young footballer running around," Kyle said.
"He will lead the side around the park extremely well and has great passing and running games...he should push for selection despite being under 15 (years old).
"Fullback Herbert Walden is one of the quickest players running around and has scored some freakish tries this year.
"Five-eighth Dwight Daley is a good all round player with silky smooth ball skills, good speed and a solid kicking game.
"Lock Jack Maye usually plays number six but is a good strong ball runner and solid in defence who also has a good kicking game."
Other big names who previously took part in last year's Mackay carnival include: Riley Barturen, Jamal Fono and Brodie Germaine.
Mount Isa Rugby League Association acting president Masina Taule'Alo implored all training squad members to give it their best shot.
"Congratulations to all players, I am sure you will train hard and represent your region with aplomb and respect for all the great players who have gone before you," he said.
"I think we are taking away two very good, well balanced squads, both of whom will be very competitive."
The under-16 squad trains from 6pm Friday at Alec Inch Oval while the under-14s are put through their paces of a Wednesday from 4pm.
