Councillor Helen Abrahams from the Gabba Ward said the green bridge outlined in the Draft River Edge Strategy made “no sense”.

But Cr Abrahams said the bridge would be a good idea if it was open only to bike and pedestrian traffic.

“I support a pedestrian cycle bridge at this location as it opens the West End peninsula to the Toowong railway station and conversely it will enable people to get access to West End and Orleigh Park,” she said.

“[But] it makes no sense for Council and the State Government to direct buses into Hill End via a Green Bridge as the road network is either congested or compromised.”

Cr Abrahams said West End’s main bus routes were already at capacity thanks to increased traffic from new apartment buildings along the river.

“I am puzzled as to why anyone would be shifting more buses to the south side of the River and then onto Victoria Bridge en route to the CBD,” she said.

“Everyone knows that Victoria Bridge becomes a bus parking lot in peak hours.”

The council is due to hand down a $2 million pre-feasibility study into the creation of a new bus bridge which would run parallel to Victoria Bridge in the city proposed by Lord Mayor Graham Quirk in 2011.

The 3.6 kilometre Suburbs 2 City Buslink would include a bus-only bridge across the Brisbane River and separate buses from other traffic and link up with the existing underground network.

The daily number of CBD bus passengers expected to more than double from 87,000 to 192,000 during the next 20 years.

But the bus link does not feature as part of the Rivers Edge Strategy which contains the West End to Toowong green bridge.

Public comment on that strategy closed at the weekend.

Cr Quirk said since feedback opened at the beginning of the month, there had been more than 230 responses to the council’s online survey.

“The Brisbane River is one of our city’s most iconic asset and it is important that we work together to plan responsibly for its activation in the future,” he said.

“All feedback on the strategy will be taken into consideration and once we have collected and reviewed all the submissions and survey responses, the next step will be to finalise the plan.”

The draft River’s Edge Strategy was announced in September last year and affects an area that runs from the University of Queensland St Lucia and Fairfield through to Bulimba and Northshore Hamilton.
