During the school holidays, children were given a sneak peak of the new activity hall to participate in the national sports-based mentoring program by Stride, giving it the tick of approval.
Weights and equipment from the existing Cloncurry Community Gym will also be moved into the new space to create a fully functioning gym, the proceeds of which will flow into more youth programs for Cloncurry kids.
Cloncurry PCYC Branch Manager, Sergeant Michael Maguire, said the project would allow the club to become fully self-sustainable.
"The extra revenue will help us run more programs on a bigger scale to engage Cloncurry youth in a positive and beneficial way," he said.
As part of the project, the Cloncurry PCYC Youth Centre will relocate to the PCYC Activities Hall in a move that will allow for more sport-based activities, something Sergeant Maguire is passionate about.
"I believe our kids should be as active as possible and moving the Youth Centre to the Activities Hall gives the kids constant access to the basketball and netball courts, the boxing arena and the oval outside," he said.
"We will focus on more physical activities and programs to keep the kids moving and having fun all at the same time."
Ernest Henry Mining General Manager, Myles Johnston, said the gym would provide funding for youth programs, employment opportunities for locals, and opportunities for personal development for current PCYC employees.
"We have funded this initiative outside our normal corporate social involvement programs because we know how important it is for our community, and our kids."
Cloncurry Shire Council provided the building, adjacent to the Showground, for use by the Cloncurry PCYC.
Mayor Andrew Daniels said the gym would do more than just improve the health of Cloncurry's residents.
"Council's continued support of the PCYC through projects like the gym ensures that livability continues to be enhanced and this helps us to attract and retain residents," he said.
