The proposed laws, which will be introduced into Parliament this spring, will give magistrates more power when dealing with dog attacks.
Fearing the laws will cause further debate in Queensland, Mount Isa resident Mitch Cleary said he supports the punishment of irresponsible dog owners, but said he was tired of seeing dogs labelled as dangerous based on their breed or job.
The owner of three well-trained pigging dogs, Mr Cleary said his dogs are family dogs that have been trained to do a job when it is required of them.
With past statements made by Mount Isa Mayor Tony McGrady that "pigging dogs" should not reside in suburban areas, Mr Cleary is concerned that people do not understand the role of such dogs. Mr Cleary said there was a large number of pigging dog owners in Mount Isa who did not know how to train a working dog, which caused problems within the community.
"If they are not raised right and treated right then they become savage," he said. "Maybe they should be labelled neglected dogs, not pigging dogs."
He said training pigging dogs was a commitment that required a professional attitude to ensure a humane approach to the hunt. Mr Cleary said he once witnessed a group of people trying to train a "about six or eight dogs" by letting them maul a baby pig to death.
"I don't know how you are going to do anything about that, a pig dog should grab hold of the pig and you dispatch it humanely in seconds if you know what you are doing," he said.
Mr Cleary said he hopes that if more stringent dog ownership laws are extended to Queensland, it would promote responsible ownership and not focus on removing pigging dogs from suburban households.
"A working dog does his job and his job is to catch pigs, these dogs are trained professionals, they are not vicious dogs," he said. "It's a bad label that they have."
