Units from Townsville, Brisbane and Longreach rolled into town today before the first night of Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo festivities.
Sergeant Ben Palmer said people should take note of the road closures around Buchanan Park before the Mardi Gras procession with a number of road conditions changing for the event.
Access to George, Simpson and Sutton Streets will be blocked during the street parade. Sgt Palmer said over the weekend the Mount Isa Police's main focus would be keeping good order and dealing with traffic related offences.
Rodeo time is also synonymous with a small spike in thefts, especially from tourists who don't secure their belongings properly. "It's also a reminder for people that opportunistic offenders will take advantage of people failing to secure their residences and vehicles," Sgt Palmer said.
"All valuables should be kept out of sight."
