The Queensland Labor Party leader said she was looking forward to experiencing the excitement and atmosphere of the rodeo, but her trip to Mount Isa at the invitation of rodeo organisers was about showing support for events on the regional calendar.
"There are not many events that can compare to the sheer thrill of witnessing this event and I know thousands of other Queenslanders as well as visitors from around the country agree with me because they flock to the Isa for it every year," she said. In a clear jab at the Newman government and Ms Stuckey, Ms Palaszczuk said people should question why the Minister won't be in town to see the Mardi Gras and maiden bull ride tonight.
"You have to question what could be more important in Ms Stuckey's diary that will keep her away from this important annual event," she said. "Just like she didn't attend the economically-critical Townsville V8s event earlier this year because she had something more important to do, she's now giving Mount Isa the snub." In response, Ms Stuckey said she had prior commitments but would be represented at the rodeo. "I love Outback Queensland and fully support the Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo," she said.
"I know how important the event is to the region and so does the Newman Government. "That is why we have provided $150,000 for the rodeo over the past three years.
"Unlike Ms Palaszczuk, I do not wish to engage in political point scoring on the issue. "I am unable to attend the rodeo due to prior commitments but I will be sending a representative along on my behalf, I expect it will be another great spectacle."
