It’s exciting to see the excitement building, and visitors arriving – ready for a fantastic weekend of rodeo action.
Our Rodeo Queen Lucy Williams and Charity Queen Cara Nolan were crowned at the gala Bell & Moir Toyota Isa Rodeo Queen Quest Ball last Saturday night. Congratulations to all five of this year’s entrants who did an amazing job raising money for their chosen charities.
Cara raised $33,619 for the Mount Isa Police Citizens Youth Club, while Irena Paznikov raised $10,833 for Centrecare; Kimberley Cunningham raised $16,500 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service; Lyndonna Ross raised $28,889 for the RACQ North West Queensland Helicopter Rescue Service; and Lucy Williams raised $20,056 for the Laura Johnson Home.
All around town you can see why the Isa is without doubt Australia’s rodeo capital. Thank you to all our local businesses who have helped spread the rodeo spirit by entering in the MIGATE Best Dressed Premises competition.
Finishing touches are being put on the floats being entered in the street parade, which is the highlight of Friday night’s mardi gras. It’s going to be a great family night, and will have plenty to keep all ages entertained.
But first, tomorrow night we have one of the Isa’s great traditions – the Mailman Express Horse Spring Races, so head out to the Mount Isa Race Club for a great night to really get rodeo weekend underway.
The rodeo action kicks off at Buchanan Park on Friday from midday, with the start of our rodeo and timed events. From 5.30pm, there’s free family entertainment and activities in the mardi gras precinct.
Following the 7pm parade, the focus swings back to the arena with our opening ceremony at 8pm. Don’t miss the introduction of the cowboys, our national anthem, Welcome to Country and the cheeky return of our rodeo clown, Big Al. Once the official ceremonies are completed, all seven events will be showcased in our fast and furious Rodeo Twenty20 program.
Friday night’s entertainment also sees Will Day & The Alibis play from 10pm. You can check out the full entertainment program for this year’s event on our website, www.isarodeo.com.au.
