A co-owner of Slightly Twisted Refreshments, in the northern Brisbane suburb of Nundah, has posted a sign explaining his decision in the cafe and on social media, where it has been widely shared.

"Rupert Murdoch (a foreign national who gave up his Australian Citizenship years ago and thus his right to a say in Australian politics) makes no apology that he is using his newspapers to subvert the political and electoral outcomes in Australia for his own economic benefit," the sign reads.

"For this reason, his newspapers The Courier-Mail and The Australian will not be available in this cafe until further notice."

Patrick Boucher, one of the cafe's three owners, said an editorial on the front page of Sydney's Daily Telegraph on the opening day of the election campaign with the headline, "Kick this Mob Out" prompted the decision.

"I decided enough was enough. Having a newspaper spout its opinion pieces as news was a real issue for me," he said.

"I have no problem with the editorial inside the newspaper but to have it as a front cover is going too far."

Mr Boucher said he had no problem with cafe customers bringing their own copies of News Corp. publications into the cafe but had no plans to resupply them in the near future.

"It will at least be for the duration of the election campaign," he said.

"While this kind of pseudo journalism continues, there’s not much point in carrying them."

The decision was made and the sign posted on Thursday.

Mr Boucher said the majority of customers supported his decision but he underestimated the reaction that would follow, with a picture of the sign spreading rapidly across social media.

"This was just a little personal thing I started myself, I didn't think it would have this reverberation," he said.

"The response so far from customers has been positive.

"From the feedback I got yesterday, I think most people are not oblivious to the bias but I think with the situation in Brisbane with printed newspapers, people may not know better unless some people take a stand."

Mr Boucher confessed he is a Labor voter but said that did not prompt his decision.

"That is not my motivation, it is taking a stand when the supposedly free media becomes so anti one political party."

Slightly Twisted Refreshments is now supplying the Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne's The Age but Mr Boucher said he would not hesitate to ban these publications, should they demonstrate any blatant bias.

The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age are both published by Fairfax, publisher of this website.

"As someone pointed out they can also be guilty of political bias, so if they follow the same path I'll stop buying them too," he said.

"But political bias is one thing, blatant misrepresentation is another."

Slightly Twisted Refreshments' move comes after the owners of the general store at Wallabadah, a tiny farming community near Tamworth, in northern New South Wales, refused to sell the Daily Telegraph on Monday in protest against publishing the editorial on the front page.
