Contrary to Tony White Oval being the first point of call to house the overflow of tourists, last Thursday Mount Isa Golf Club manager Annette McBride was notified by Council to play host to tourists on the club's land.
"The Golf Club was an obvious choice for Council because we have all this land," she said.
"It was a last minute thing, yes, but Mount Isa City Council, true to their word, have since been wonderful to get the ball rolling here so I can facilitate and organise the area for caravanners and campers."
Mount Isa City Council Mayor Tony McGrady said formal notification was the reason behind the last minute notice given to the golf club to accommodate the influx of tourists.
"We (Mount Isa City Council) realise many people travel to the city for the rodeo by caravan and naturally, at a time such as this, the caravan parks and other facilities are at full capacity," he said.
"We allow for people to camp at a facility in the lead up to and over the rodeo weekend only."
Cr McGrady said this year however, therE would be two options for caravanners for accommodation.
"This year the golf club is the first option for tourists and if that becomes full for any reason, then option two will open to accommodate people travelling at Tony White Oval," he said.
"We were waiting on formal notification to allow tourists to stay at the Golf Club and that was the reason behind the late notice given to the manager of the facility."
"It is a temporary measure and I would be reluctant to support any extension of this following Rodeo weekend."
Ms McBride said since finding out the last minute arrangements, she had been inundated with phone calls from desperate tourists seeking accommodation.
"I've already booked 100 caravans and I expect plenty more after taking more than 200 phone calls over the weekend," she said.
"We will try to house as many as we can on the land we have available outside the golf course and tourists will be able to use the toilet and shower facilities we have downstairs in the clubhouse."
She said the plans would not have gone ahead without the assistance and in-kind support the club had received to make the stay for tourists possible.
"Downer Engineering have lent us some lighting for the nights and Mount Isa City Council have given us portaloos, extra rubbish collections and have been making sure another road leading to the front of our land was compliant and safe for travellers to drive on.
"Tourists can stay at the Mount Isa Golf Club off Mica Creek Road from $10 per person per night.
