The 24-year-old was a favourite to win the fourth season of Beauty and the Geek, which aired last year on Channel 7.
After undertaking town planning studies, Mr Newell always knew he'd end up working in regional Australia.
Now based in Mount Isa working at the city council he is looking forward to gaining hands-on experience in the industry.
Mr Newell said that he thought the hype from the show would have died down by now but has found anonymity harder to come by in smaller towns.
``It's like a chain reaction,'' he said.
``One person recognises you and they tell someone else and on it goes.''
Remaining good friends with show teammate Kristy, Mr Newell still sports the infamous nipple piercing he endured to receive immunity from elimination for the pair.
``It's like a souvenir of my time on the show,'' he said.
To the question on everybody's mind; are the girls really that dumb? And are the guys really geeks?
Mr Newell said it was somewhat of a myth.
``The girls are smart in their own ways _ they're street smart,'' he said.
``The guys are socially awkward but are kindred spirits.
``I had an instant connection with them.''
And what's Mr Newell's advice for Mount Isan geeks interested in stepping out of their comfort zone?
``Definitely do it, don't worry,'' he said.
``It's a once in a lifetime opportunity, a great experience and you gain a whole new group of friends.''
The latest instalment of Beauty and the Geek kicked off at 8:30pm last night.
