The signs are already in place on the Bruce Highway between Maryborough and Bundaberg with more to be installed on the New England and Cunningham highways.

The question and answer signs are placed five kilometres apart, with the questions focused on state history.

The RACQ's executive director of policy Michael Roth said the signs were a good idea and worth expanding around Queensland.

"The people in the car talk and they are thinking again, asking questions, rather than being too fatigued to focus on driving," Mr Roth said.

He did not think it was something that would distract drivers, nor did he think drivers would google the answers.

"No, we believe it is a reasonable effort to keep motorists focused," he said.

"They will put the signs out in known crash zones. Zones where they suspect one of the reasons for the crash has been people being too fatigued and not focusing about what they are doing."

He said that was the main reason for the locations of the signs along the Bruce Highway.

"From Brisbane, they've been driving a long time, they do need something to engage their brain slightly differently," he said.

"And those questions are designed for that."

"Obviously it's only a small thing and doesn't obviate the need for improved roads and roadside and intersections, so that if a driver does lose attention it doesn't end up as a fatality or serious injury."

The idea was among 41 community projects funded by an $850,000 grant from the Department of Transport and Main Roads to improve road safety.

A sample of the questions already installed on the Bruce Highway are:

– "Who was the first premier of Queensland?

Five kilometres after the sign asking the question, was a second sign with the answer.

– "Robert Herbert".

Other questions ask "What is a monotreme? (a mammal laying eggs); and "Where is the town Captain Cook first landed" (The town of 1770).
