The Brisbane Airport Corporation has asked passengers to check with their airline regarding their travel plans.

Travellers have taken to Twitter over the delay, however the airport has assured passengers it is working on rescheduling flights as soon as possible.

Ground travellers have not fared any better.  The south-east’s road network was gridlocked for hours because of the rain and passengers on the Gold Coast and Beenleigh train lines also experienced delays for up to 15 minutes at a time for more than an hour.

A thunderstorm warning is in place for the city, with between 5 to 15 millimetres of rain expected to fall.

Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino said the brunt of the storm would be south of the city, where damaging winds and hailstones were expected.

“A low-pressure trough has caused [today’s storms] over southeast Queensland, combined with plenty of moisture being fed in from the Coral Sea,” he said.

Major storms aren’t expected in the city later in the evening, he said.

Earlier, the Bureau of Meteorology said 46mm of rain fell today at the Enoggera Dam and 12mm fell at Brisbane Airport.

Shortly after 3pm, the bureau issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Warwick, Toowoomba, Dalby, Emerald, Rockhampton, Kingaroy and Stanthorpe.

Earlier today, thunderstorms slowly rolled across southeast Queensland and were expected to dump more than 50 millimetres of rain over the region.

Warnings for southeast Queensland, including Brisbane and the Gold Coast, were issued shortly before midday.

"It's affecting Brisbane right now. At the moment it's extending from Rockhampton to Roma and southeast Queensland," forecaster Brett Harrison said.

"We've already had 22 millimetres of rain fall west of Brisbane."

Hail blanketed the Darling Downs and Lockyer Valley as storms rolled across southeast Queensland on Wednesday.

Homes in Toowoomba, Laidley, Gatton and Ramsay were hardest hit, with the State Emergency Service receiving 97 calls from residents needing help with damaged roofs and windows.

Farmer Paul Windholf said he lost about 16 hectares worth of melons on his Tenthill property southwest of Gatton.

‘‘Some had only been planted a week and some had been planted a month,’’ he told 612 ABC Brisbane.

‘‘It probably cost us $100,000 to plant that so there’s that loss, plus the loss of not being able to harvest.’’

Meanwhile, Brisbane backyards received a drenching with 54 millimetres of rain falling at Strathpine and 51 millimetres falling in Waterford.

The city was also treated to a spectacular light show, with 29,757 lightning strikes recorded by the Energex Lightning Tracker.

The bureau forecast a 90 per cent chance of between 10 and 30 millimetres of rain falling in Brisbane on Thursday. The mercury was expected to reach a top of 27 degrees.
