On February 22 at 2.30am, police intercepted Long on Scarr Street after noticing his car driving on the wrong side of the road. He recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.172.
The court heard Long told police he had consumed about 10 stubbies before getting behind the wheel.
Long's defence lawyer requested a significantly higher fine in favour of license disqualification as he would likely lose his job if he lost his license.
The court heard Long had no relevant history to the charge.
Magistrate Rod Madsen took into account he was ``remorseful'' and that part of the reason for driving on the wrong side of the road was because Long was trying to look down an alleyway for a mate he had welfare concerns about.
Mr Madsen said there was a strong ``need for deterrence'' of high-range drink driving offences in the area.
