The pair was part of an army of volunteers gathered at a Beenleigh sports club to raise money for the children of Joseph "Joey" King and Rahuia "Rahi" Hohua, who were killed when a light plane crashed north of Brisbane last weekend.

Ms Hohua had organised a skydiving trip as a present for her partner, but the young couple never made it home.

The Cessna 206 disintegrated in a fireball when it crashed into the Caboolture Airfield shortly after takeoff, killing all on board.

The couple leave behind five children; Mr King's daughter Nikita, 12, son Tristan, 8, in Perth, his infant daughter Trinity in Brisbane and Ms Hohua's children, Thalia, 7, and five-year-old Cruz.

Skydiving instructors Glenn Norman and Juraj Glesk were killed in the crash, as well as the pilot.

Outside the sports club on Saturday, a group of men manned large steam ovens fashioned from metal kegs, cooking chicken, pork, potatoes and pumpkin wrapped in foil parcels.

Inside, women gathered around an old pool table covered with a piece of plywood, wrapped the parcels in white sheets of paper and bundled them up for waiting families.

The volunteers worked tirelessly, with sweat dripping from their faces, to fill more than 1000 orders.

Their efforts raised more than $10,000 for an education fund for Mr King's and Ms Hohua's children.

Ms Hohua's younger brother Hape Hohua stopped by to thank the volunteers.

"Words can't explain this," he said, struggling to hold back tears. "Just to see all the love and support here is overwhelming. We are so grateful."

Blaine Walters, 32, brought his family to the Hangi. He had turned to Mr King, his former touch football teammate, for support after moving to Australia from New Zealand in December.

"He messaged me about a week before the accident asking me to go over to his house to talk, because he was helping me find a job, but I couldn't go. I wish I had," Mr Walters said.

The New Zealand and Pacific Island communities of Logan, south of Brisbane, have rallied in the past to support their brothers and sisters in need.

Similar community spirit was displayed after the Slacks Creek house fire which claimed 11 lives in August 2011.

"It's what we do," Ms Wynyard said.
