Panamuna Outrigger Canoe Club president Brad Martin has expressed his sympathies after a competitor died in an outrigger canoe event hosted by the club in Mooloolaba on Saturday.

Mr Martin said the 49-year-old Gold Coast man was believed to have suffered a heart attack during the To Moffat and Back Regatta and despite every attempt to save his life, nothing more could have been done.
"It was upsetting for the competitors and also the members of the club doing the rescue work," Mr Martin said.
"I would like to thank all the competitors and spectators on the day who respected the privacy of the first aid team and allowed them to do their work. It's just an unfortunate accident and all competitors should still keep competing in the spirit of Aloha."
