This year's Queensland Youth Parliament was launched on Saturday at state Parliament House, bringing together 93 of the state's most politically-eager 15 to 25-year-olds.

The 19th year of the parliament will see all of Queensland's 89 electorates represented, with an additional four indigenous seats also allocated.

The launch was followed by a weekend-long forum to prepare members about the legislative process, where they debated issues relating to alcohol-related violence with Government frontbencher Tim Mander and Opposition Police spokesperson Bill Byrne in attendance.

“Alcohol-related violence is a serious concern for Queensland youth, as young people are more often than not both the perpetrators and sadly the victims of violence,” said Youth Member for Brisbane Central, Timothy Kariotis.

“The fear that a fun night out could lead to serious harm is evident for many 18 to 25 year olds in Brisbane Central,” he said.

Youth Governor Bella Vecchio said the Parliament will now head into bill-writing phase after focusing their legislative agenda for the year.

“The Parliament is sure to deliver some of the freshest solutions and most passionate debates we've seen,” said Ms Vecchio.

Youth Member for Aspley Chelsea Simmons has identified access to disability services for young people a major priority for her community.

“Many schools have newly-refurbished special education units or recently opened separate special education schools. It's a trending topic in relation to the National Disability Insurance Scheme,” she said.

Ms Simmons said politicians should use social media to better connect with their young constituents and she looks forward to representing Aspley.

“I would suggest that more politicians get online and connect with the youth of Australia in a forum that we understand and are not afraid to voice our opinions on.”

“Already this year, I have had opportunities to speak not only with my local MP Tracy Davis, but also with many older and young friends, colleagues, family members and heads of small local community organisations.

“I feel I am prepared to enter Youth Parliament with their thoughts and comments in mind and put forward their opinions as much as my own.”

Other members highlighted cheap and accessible public transport and youth unemployment as further key issues, while Youth Member for Woodridge Zuha Ali labelled proposed changes to the Racial Discrimination Act “an atrocity”.

The Queensland Youth Parliament will sit for a week in Parliament in September, where eight pieces of legislation will be debated.
