What do all of these world number one women's tennis players have in common with Brisbane?

They are among 600 former players, officials, business people and Brisbane residents who are asking Brisbane City Council to name part of the redeveloped Milton Tennis Centre after Queensland tennis star Wendy Turnbull.

Nicknamed 'The Rabbit' for her speed on the court, Turnbull was a singles runner-up at the 1977 US Open, the 1979 French Open, and the 1980 Australian Open.

Wendy Turnbull - who grew up at Sandgate - won four women's doubles titles and five mixed doubles titles at Grand Slam events.

During her career she was in the Women's Top 10 from 1978 to 1985 and peaked at number 3.

She captained or coached Australia's Federation Cup team from 1985 to 1993 and played on the team from 1977 until 1988.

After she retired, Wendy Turnbull was appointed to the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Olympic Committee.

Wendy Turnbull was made a member of the Order of the British Empire in 1984 and was inducted into Australia's Tennis Hall of Fame in 2009.

Brisbane City Council is now redeveloping the old Milton Tennis Centre into a park on Milton Road which includes tennis courts - the Roy Emerson Tennis Centre - and a landscaped garden.

Tennis Queensland is keen to have part of the new gardens at what will be called Frew Park on Milton Road, named after Wendy Turnbull.

Brisbane's Citizen of the Year, Peter Rasey said the "Wendy Turnbull Green" at Frew Park would bring the record of one of Queensland's best women's tennis players to a new audience.

"Brisbane has a fantastic tennis heritage, but we have never really taken advantage of it," Mr Rasey said.

"Recently, we have established the Ken Fletcher Park at Tennyson and I would like to think we can do more with this."

Businessman Stefan Ackerie has agreed to donate the large tennis raquet - that once stood on top of the old Milton Tennis Centre - to the new Roy Emerson Tennis Centre at Frew Park.

The Council has said it would consider all options for the name.

"Frew Park is under construction and names for the Green will be selected when the Park is opened," a spokesman said.

"Council will consider all names put forward for the Green and welcomes suggestions."
