Demolition of the RSL was expected to begin about 6am this morning, paving the way for the total clearance of the 17,000 square metre block bought from the Mount Isa RSL by Driftwood Mount Isa.
The 44-lot gated community will comprise of three-bedroom duplexes, four-bedroom stand-alone houses and 14 three-bedroom terrace houses, a communal recreation area with barbecue facilities, and a swimming pool.
With development approved in June last year, project manager Trent Rowell said stage 1 was expected to be completed by November 2013, but the Glencore Xstrata merger caused a slow-down of action.
Mr Rowell said they acknowledged the amount of properties currently on the market, but was confident that the city could sustain additional housing; especially modern, low-maintenance builds, released in stages to avoid flooding the market.
The properties will be priced between $460,000 and low $500,000s. The development will pay homage to the former Mount Isa RSL, giving the sub-branch the naming rights for the five lanes within the estate.
