Traditional Easter Sunday mass attracted worshippers to churches around the southeast.

More than 1000 people attended the 8am service at St Stephen's Cathedral, topped by the 10am service with more than 1400.

Catholic archbishop Mark Coleridge urged believers to remember Jesus' resurrection whenever they felt hopeless.

“When the tomb of Jesus was sealed with a big round stone, that stone must have seemed like a cosmic full-stop. The party was over. The world is full of what seem like full-stops – situations that seem hopeless,” he said.

“Easter says that there's no such thing as an ultimately hopeless situation, that every full-stop is in fact a comma or perhaps a dash. That's why Easter is the womb of true human hope.”

Those who worshipped the sun took advantage of perfect autumn conditions and temperatures in the mid-20s to head to the water.

Surf Life Saving Queensland supervisor Anthony Lunney said clear skies and a water temperature around 24 degrees meant Gold Coast beaches were packed.

“It's been one of the biggest Easters I've seen for a long time,” he said.

“It's been absolutely beautiful weather... the swell dropped off today so it's much nicer and more manageable for us.”

Mr Lunney said the ideal conditions were set to continue into Easter Monday, meaning another busy day.

“I think so... at least for half a day until everybody lines up and tries to get home,” he said.

Southeast Queensland children were left hunting for rabbit paw prints after the Easter Bunny visited during the night.

Eleesha Lucas from Tom's Confectionery Warehouse at Hendra said staff had been run off their feet during their traditional 24 hour trading in the lead up to Easter.

“All of our shelves are bare and we have massive gaps with no product,” she said.

“We had serving lines that went almost down to the back of the store.”

She said Cadbury's Marvellous Creation bunnies, sugar-coated candy eggs and choc-covered marshmallow bunnies were the most popular.

Ms Lucas said the store was still busy on Sunday afternoon, despite the drastically reduced stock.

“They've been grabbing Easter stuff as well... people are doing very last minute shopping.”

Police officers will maintain their focus on the Fatal Five – speeding, drink driving, seat belts, fatigue and distracted driving – into the Easter Monday public holiday.

The state's road toll since Thursday night stands at two.
