Warrant Officer Malone - who serves in Delta Company 51st division of the Far North Queensland Regiment - attended the Anzac Day service held at the Laura Johnson Home yesterday.
He was there to pay respects to the many servicemen and women who fought and died in war - including three of his friends.
``In the 10 years since we've operated in Timor, Afghanistan, I have lost three of my friends,'' Warrant Officer Malone said. ``I'm paying respect for these men.''
``Just losing someone you know, it's difficult.''
He said he was prepared for the fact that servicemen he knew could die.
His son, who recently joined the Australian Army, also knew the dangers.
