Yasmin Phillamina May Dempsey, 24, faced the Mount Isa Magistrates Court this week on one charge of assault occasioning bodily harm, and one count of entering a dwelling with intent whilst armed.
After discovering her now ex-partner had been unfaithful with another woman, the court heard that Dempsey entered the dwelling of the victim's home with a plastic bag containing a large hunting knife and a shifter weighing about one kilogram.
Dempsey struck her victim in the head with the shifter, causing large lacerations and chunks of hair to be pulled from her head.
Police attended and observed Dempsey standing outside of the residence covered in blood and highly agitated.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Heather Whiting said the seriousness of the incident and the premeditation suggested that a term of imprisonment could be within range.
Magistrate Rod Madsen said people within the community were too often resorting to violence to deal with personal grievances.
``You could have killed this woman,'' he said.
The imprisonment order will be served as an intensive correctional order to ensure Dempsey receives sufficient rehabilitation to avoid further offending.
