A day ahead of Anzac Day, military personnel are joining volunteers to support the RSL’s Anzac Appeal this year.
RSL Queensland state president Terry Meehan said it was important to continue support for our defence personnel.
“There are a number of veterans that need independent living systems,” he said.
“We’ve got people who need emergency accommodation and we’ve got a lot of elderly who are locked in social isolation.
“All funds raised go directly to [the veterans’] welfare, that’s the sole purpose.”
This year will be the 99th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing and the first Anzac Day at home for many veterans who have returned from Afghanistan.
Trooper Matt McQuillan, 23, will march for the first time in Brisbane on Friday.
He said Anzac Day was a day of importance and a day to commemorate the actions of the military personnel.
“It’s a day to reflect and remember the actions of not just those who have made a sacrifice, but the actions of our defence force and New Zealand’s defence force,” he said.
Mr Meehan said he anticipated the funds raised this year would exceed last year’s total.
“Our aim is to raise a dollar for every Queenslander who has served in Australia’s defence forces since the first Anzac Day in 1915,” he said.
