The Urban Sketchers movement is a worldwide phenomenon that encourages artists of all skill levels to meet at specific locations and draw together.

Judy-Joy Bell joined five years ago, and founded the Brisbane chapter in 2013.

“See the world one sketch at a time is their motto,” she said.

“It’s an amazing group ... you can travel anywhere in the world, put a request out and everyone puts their hands up and says ‘Come sketch with us!’”.

The 61-year-old retired nurse said location suggestions are offered via the group’s Facebook page, then members vote on where they’d like to go.

Ms Bell said Anzac Square offered a range of subject matter for artists including architecture, trees and people.

“I think we’re privileged to be able to sit there and have that wonderful place to be able to sketch and draw and it means something,” she said.

Ms Bell said their visit on Tuesday coincided with Anzac Day preparations, including soldiers practising drills.

She said that provided artists with extra material to work with, although there were some unexpected interruptions.

“I was drawing a tree, having the most wonderful time and then a big truck came along with a cherry picker and started cutting off the branches I was drawing,” she said, laughing.

“I just roughly finished it and went on to something else.”

The Brisbane Urban Sketchers group has around 100 members, with 15 taking part in the Anzac Square outing.

Ms Bell hoped more people would join the collective, to help inspire and learn from each other.

“Everyone is welcome, and we are of all levels, from absolute beginners to professional artists,” she said.

“But you need to bring your own sketchpad.”
