The decision recognises native title rights over the Georgina River, its tributaries and includes the town of Urandangi.

Boulia Shire Mayor Rick Britton accepted some residents had concerns about the decision on Friday, but urged his community to avoid conflict and work together.

``We are only a small community and everyone has to work together to move forward,'' he said.

``There can't be conflict in our community because that's what breaks communities up.

``They were the first people here and they are the carers of the land and they should be congratulated on receiving that recognition.'' 

Principal Legal Officer for the Queensland South Native Title Service Tim Wishart said residents had nothing to fear from the decision.

``There remains a general lack of understanding about native title and its relationship with land tenure and property rights,'' he said.

``The High Court has confirmed that a grant of freehold is absolute and forever.

``Mum and dad's backyard is safe.'' 

Mount Isa Flexible Learning Centre Head of Campus and claimant Thelma Parker said granting native title was about getting back a connection with her people's land.

``It's about feeling connected and spiritual ownership of the land,'' she said.

``It's also providing back to our young people a sense of cultural awareness.''
