Adrian John Ashton, 40, was fined $700 but was given no recorded conviction.
Police found the wooden stocked crossbow perched on a motorbike in Ashton's shed in Margaret Street at 11.05am, April 16.
The police prosecutor said the crossbow was illegal in Queensland because it was classified as a medieval tool.
Ashton also used the crossbow at the Mount Isa Bow Hunters Club despite signs stating they must not be used, the prosecutor said.
The defendant's lawyer Mark Boreham, from Legal Aid Queensland, said Ashton found the crossbow in the Mount Isa rubbish dump.
A scope was attached to the crossbow when found, which was given to a friend, Mr Boreham said.
Mr Ashton used the crossbow at the club after previously seeing them used in the club.
Before a recent change of legislation crossbows were legally able to be used in Queensland, Mr Boreham said.
The lawyer asked for no conviction to be recorded because it would interfere with his client's plans to visit Thailand.
