MOUNT Isa's Vietnam Veterans honoured Long Tan Day and their fallen comrades on Vietnam Veterans Day on Saturday at the grave site of Pte T.E.A. (Timo) Pesonen, 8 R.A.R. at the Mount Isa Cemetery. 521 Australians died during the war, out of almost 60,000 young men who were sent to Vietnam, many of them conscripted into the armed forces. The Battle of Long Tan in 1966 saw the loss of 18 Australian soldiers and another 24 wounded as 108 Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought a pitched battle against more than 2000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong soldiers. The Vets met after the ceremony for refreshments at the Mount Isa Bowls Club.
