Hot conditions didn't stop both sides from showing their attacking flair, and at half-time they were locked at 1-1 after goals to Pirates' Dave Bortolo and Aces' Graham Houldsworth.
The action continued into the second half with Pirates gradually gaining the ascendancy leaving it to Erik McNaught to slot in the winning goal.
Bortolo and Mark Liddle were amongst the best players in a highly entertaining fixture.
Hornets' goal-shooting ace Peter Wallace dominated his team's win over T-Birds scoring all of his team's goals in an impressive 5-2 win.
Hornets led 2-1 at half-time, and Wallace continued to stamp his authority on the game with strong running and superb finishing and another three goals in the second term.
Geoff Potgleter also played strongly and was unlucky not to convert on several occasions.
In the women's match against the same clubs, missed opportunities cost both teams dearly and the game ended in a gritty 0-0 draw.
Hornets' first-half defence was a bit scrappy allowing T-Birds to raid their attacking circle.
Hornets' short passing game began to work well for them resulting in an increased attack from Cam Mitchell and Larissa Dowdle putting pressure on the goalie.
Vic Ferris worked hard to get the first goal on the board, but both teams squandered scoring opportunities amidst some desperate defence.
Ally Ryan and Deanne Philp had outstanding games for T-Birds.
The re-match will be worth watching.
