Former Queensland Police dog Bosun rose to prominence in 2011, when he chased down the offenders who fatally shot Detective Senior Constable Damian Leeding.
The German Shepherd took his last breaths on Monday in the arms of his handler Senior Constable Wayne Algie who has been Bosun’s carer since he was a pup.
Bosun’s five-year career in the force came to an end last year, when he swapped the Gold Coast police beat for Senior Constable Algie’s backyard.
Senior Constable Algie said Bosun, aged 9, lived life to the fullest and had a great work ethic.
Upon his retirement, Senior Constable Algie said Bosun would see out his days “laying around the house and getting into trouble”.
“He’s got a very good temperament. He’s the sort of dog that turns it on when he needs to but after that he just turns it off,” Senior Constable Algie said.
Bosun’s accolades include the Australian Defence Force Service Medal and the German Shepherd Council of Australia National Award for Outstanding Service.
