Instead of reading out of a text book or copying off the board, St Kieran’s year 6 class received a lesson in Australian politics from Mayor Tony McGrady and even took part in a mock debate.
During the lesson the class discussed the three levels of government in Australia citizenship and voting, and legislation and policies.
Cr McGrady, whose political career has included roles such as minister for mines and energy, minister for police and corrective services, minister for state development and innovation, and speaker of the Legislative Assembly, said he was impressed by the students’ knowledge.
“They have a great understanding already of how things work and I think that is important for the next generation,” he said.
“We may well have the future leaders of our cities, our states, and our country right here in Mount Isa.”
Before leaving, the Mayor presented the class with a historical Hansard volume to assist them with their future studies.
