Mount Isa City Library’s first Writer’s Group meeting tomorrow evening is the start of a campaign to get readers and writers face to face to share their knowledge. 

With no membership fee, commitment or qualifications needed, library assistant and group facilitator Samantha Schraag said she hoped the community would come have a look at what she has in store for the group’s members down the track. 

“You don’t have to come each month with a new piece written,” she said. 

“You can just turn up and listen to someone else about their process and hopefully it won’t just inform people and connect people but maybe inspire as well. 

 “We wanted to create a community where these writers with different types of abilities and interests in what they write can come together and just share their experiences. 

“Writing, as much as reading, is a really solitary practice so it’s nice to be able to know that there is a person behind the words on the page.” 

The group will have access to resources from the Queensland Writer’s Centre, State Library of Queensland and ABC Open. 

Miss Schraag said local and touring authors would be invited to speak to the group about their process and getting work published. 

Bloggers and multimedia fans will also be able to access resources to help tell stories in their own way. 

“We’re a really inclusive library so we respect and understand there are other cultural traditions of storytelling and so a story told around a fire is no less important than something written on a page,” she said. 

The Mount Isa City Library Writer’s Group will meet this Friday from 5pm-6pm. 

The free program is open for participants 17 years and older and will run on the last Friday of every month.
