The Mount Isa trainer prepared Heart to win Townsville’s $75,000 Cleveland Bay Handicap (1200metres) in 2010, and chases another victory in the event with Le Cap and Outstandingly tomorrow.
And this time he’s even more confident than when he set gallant sprinter Heart for the feature race.
“I was confident Heart would run a big race that year,” he said.
“But I’m probably more confident with Le Cap ... his Brisbane form is strong.”
It’s with good reason he’s buoyant about his chances – both have drawn perfectly with barrier three for Outstandingly and Le Cap in barrier six.
Four-year-old Le Cap is clearly his best hope in the race, coming into the event with strong form in Brisbane and a last start win in Townsville. Outstandingly was dominant in Mount Isa three starts ago but failed in Mackay and Townsville at his two most recent starts. Morris admits that on Outstandingly’s “best form” he could trouble his stablemate, but it’s with good reason he favours Le Cap.
“(Le Cap) has come through his last start win well and I couldn’t be happier with him,” he said.
Le Cap toyed with Albertique in Townsville last start but comes up against stiffer opposition tomorrow.
“The main dangers are Playtime and Barachello,” Morris said.
But Morris will be banking on Le Cap’s relaxed, nonchalant attitude to help him win the race.
“He’s a very reserved horse, he hasn’t got a lot of personality ... he just eats and sleeps pretty much,” he said.
Dale Missen will partner Le Cap while Tracy O’Hara will ride Outstandingly.
