Under the shadows of last year’s trees, grade 1 pupils helped special guests dig holes, plant flowering eucalypts and then fill them in with dirt.
St Joseph’s principal Tim Ham said the school was grateful for the support from Bell and Moir, the Rose Garden Nursery and Bunnings to make the day possible.
“Planting these trees is good for the school’s environment but it’s also good for the kids to see this is what they have to do to keep the environment healthy,” he said.
More than 30 trees were planted at St Joseph’s yesterday, with another expected to be planted at Townview State School tomorrow.
Four young students from the Catholic school’s environmental group will also travel to Townsville next week to take part in Catholic Education’s Eco Warrior’s Big Day out for the first time.
