Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo will receive $30,000 from the Mount Isa City Council this year, but last year it was given $60,000.
The funding cut affects this year’s rodeo.
Rodeo manager Natalie Flecker has estimated that last year’s rodeo economically boosted the Mount Isa community by $5.97 million, and Queensland’s by $7.88 million.
Last year’s rodeo attendance was 29,642, which included event-related personnel.
“There are many challenges and expenses involved with putting on an event this size in a remote location, and the support of our council is vitally important,” Ms Flecker said.
“The Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo values any and all sponsorship that we receive towards the costs to stage and promote the rodeo and its associated events, all which contribute in a very positive way to Mount Isa city.”
Ms Flecker said it was important to remember the rodeo is a non-profit event presented by two Rotary clubs.
“Since its inception in 1959, the rodeo has directly donated $3.8 million back to Mount Isa community, sporting and charity organisations.
Charities the rodeo supports through Queen Quest include Paws, Hoofs and Claws Mount Isa, Neighbourhood Watch, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
