Mining expo MINEX will be granted $20,000 instead of $40,000. Mount Isa Chamber of Commerce president Travis Crowther said it was disappointing the funding had been cut, but it was “great” the council was still supporting the event.
“What they’ve dropped out, it’s a shame and disappointing but in the end we understand it’s probably what a lot of businesses have been doing and at the end of the day they are a business and have to look at what they can cut down on,” he said.
Mr Crowther remained positive.
“It might open up a place for a new major sponsor, when one door closes another one opens.”
The Fish Stocking Competition funding is reduced from $7000 to $3000.
Mount Isa Show will receive $20,000, and its funding was cut by $5000.
The Anzac Day ceremony’s funding will increase from $4000 to $10,000.
Costs of the commemoration will be more to mark the centenary.
Mount Isa City Mayor Tony McGrady said the council needed to balance its books.
“This is a tough budget but we have been forced to take these difficult decisions,” he said.
