A man wiedling a handgun forced his way into the woman's car on Drayton Road in Toowoomba's south about 9am, police said.

The woman's three-year-old child was in the back seat at the time.

The man forced the woman to drive for more than an hour south-west along the Gore Highway to the town of Kindon.

The woman told police she was followed by a black sedan during the terrifying 136-kilometre journey.

The man instructed the woman to stop the car at Kindon, where he got out and jumped into the black sedan.

Police located the woman and child at Kindon unhurt, but both were taken to Goodiwindi Hospital for assessment before being released.

Inspector Mike Curtin said investigations were continuing, with officers searching for the alleged gunman and the black sedan.

"The 26-year-old female from Toowoomba has already been interviewed by detectives in Goondiwindi," he told the Toowoomba Chronicle.

"She will be further spoken to by detectives in Toowoomba to gain a full appreciation of the situation."
