Gidgee Healing is the program agent for Deadly Choices with the campaign empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to make healthy choices for themselves and their families – to stop smoking, to eat good food and to exercise daily.
“It’s great to come back and have the opportunity, first and foremost, to work with Gidgee Healing and being an ambassador for Deadly Choices,” he said.
“It’s an opportunity for me to give back to the community and promote the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle through Deadly Choices.
“It’s all about making those healthy choices and, being seen as a role model in the community, I can spread the message in a positive way.”
On his way to Mount Isa, Prince stopped in at Normanton where children and some of the town’s elders underwent health checks.
“The message is not only focused on the elderly but also starting with the kids so they understand right and wrong things about smoking, drinking, chronic disease and leadership,” he said.
The Deadly Choices message targets schools to remind students about leadership, quitting smoking, chronic disease, nutrition, physical activity, harmful substances, Medicare and the primary health system.
Prince is using rugby league – and his profile as a sportsman – as a tool to inspire kids.
And Prince says the Deadly Choices program is working as it continues to branch out across Queensland to the areas where it’s most needed.
