The internationally renowned musician has organised to simulcast his live performance with the Australian Youth Orchestra at the Civic Centre lawn this week for his friends back in Isa. About 20 years ago, Mr Barton began cultivating his standout skills on the didgeridoo.
Kalkadoon Community chairwoman Noeleen Dempsey said Mr Barton contacted her early on to see if a broadcast of the performance was possible, and making it free was his gift to the community.
“William is from here, this is his traditional country, and his dad was an elder here and a founding member of the organisation,” she said.
“We wanted to make it a free-for-all to give back to the community – that was his idea.”
Mount Isa mayor Tony McGrady said he had fond memories of William Barton’s childhood and was delighted to have his talents broadcast to the residents of Mount Isa this week.
“This young indigenous man has travelled the world and delighted with his wonderful talents,” he said.
“From his humble beginning of life in Mount Isa, William is a true testament of the greatness one can achieve.
“It will be a pleasure to welcome Mr Barton back to Mount Isa in this unique way.”
The performance will be held on the Civic Centre lawn on West Street on Thursday at 7.30pm.
The event will be featured on a large screen complimented by full sound.
The Civic Centre will be open for bathroom facilities, and the sale of drinks.
