Wanderers will go into the crucial match full of confidence after a fast-finishing win against Cloncurry on Saturday at Alec Inch Oval.
Front rower Shane Kutz, winger Mesi Taukei and hooker Matty McNamara lead the way for Wanderers in its 24-22 victory.
In a fitting finale, Anton Saltmere scored a try in the final stages of the match to clinch an emotional victory as Wanderers honoured the passing of club stalwarts Brett Kelly and Bill Sewter before the match.
Wanderers coach Alan Baillie said it was a difficult match given the emotion involved as the club paid tribute to the two legends.
Sewter was the grandfather of Wanderers pair Anton and Clargie Saltmere.
Baillie also praised Cloncurry’s efforts in pushing Wanderers until the final minutes, especially halfback Corey Moseley and the evergreen Brendan Baillie.
Cloncurry will now make the tough road trip to the Gulf to do battle with Normanton for a spot in the grand final.
“If the Curry take a full contingent up there, there will be nothing in it,” Baillie said.
“It will be a very good game.”
Despite taking top spot on the ladder, Wanderers’ decider with Town is also a do-or-die match-up.
Baillie admitted it was “unusual and a bit of a challenge” to be faced with a match that will decide the fate of Wanderers’ season in the first week of finals, despite claiming the minor premiership.
