Premier Campbell Newman went to the Port of Brisbane on Wednesday morning to talk about the Port of Brisbane, jobs, growth in the Queensland economy and Thursday’s Queensland Plan.

And nothing else.

Journalist: Chris Davis has said certain things in recent times and some very different things in the past, do you believe his more recent positions are sincere and do you believe he is being consistent?

Mr Newman: I am here today to talk about this investment and the job plans we have for this state.

...Journalist: Justice [John] Muir likened Chief Justice [Tim] Carmody to a suburban GP leading open heart surgery. Any thoughts?

Mr Newman: Again I am here to talk about jobs today. I am excited by this economic investment in the state of Queensland and I am not going to be distracted by other matters like that today.

Journalist: [Former Supreme Court Justice] Richard Chesterman has repeated his criticism saying the Supreme Court is now going to be ineffective. Do you have any concerns about that and how are the attempts to mend the fences with the judiciary going?

Mr Newman: Well, my concern is that we continue to invest in this state to create jobs, that is why I am here today recognising a $110 million in private sector investment and the Queensland Plan that we will release tomorrow, talks about how we will continue to grow the economy, protect the environment and improve frontline service delivery to Queenslanders.

Journalist: Have you been able to make another date with Justice McMurdo for that meeting?

Mr Newman: I am not here to comment on that today.

But Mr Newman was happy to talk about the $110 million investment the privately-run Port of Brisbane was making in its road freight transport network, which the Opposition said was part of the deal when Labor signed over the port on a 99-year lease.

“The deal is the Port Corporation continue to invest in the infrastructure to grow the jobs here at the port, but to make sure that the port continues to fill its vital economic role,” Mr Newman said.

“The exciting thing is this is happening four to five years early, the exciting thing is there will be 400 jobs being created by this project. The exciting thing is that by ensuring that they continue to keep pace with growth or get ahead of the curve, the exciting thing there is Queensland can grow as a result.”
