More than 120 riders are expected to make the 202 kilometre journey from the Mount Isa Civic Centre to the Northern Territory border tomorrow morning.
One of the organisers, Steve Carson, will ride in his seventh event and is blown away by how it grows each year.
“It was incredible to pass the $100,000 mark for money raised last year and we are pushing ahead for even more donations this year,” he said.
“The beauty of the ride is that 90 per cent of the money raised is donated back locally to charities and people in need.”
These include the Mount Isa PCYC, Mount Isa hospital and North-West wildlife care.
“The PCYC will be providing assistance for riders at the 50km mark, the hospital at 100km and North West wildlife care at 150km,” Carson said.
“Without their help, the event wouldn’t run as smoothly, so we donate some of the money back into their respective businesses.”
While the ride attracts predominantly people from around the region, Carson says the event is gradually building.
“This year we have riders coming from Townsville, New South Wales and Victoria, which is amazing,” he said.
“In the coming years, we will push for greater involvement from the coastal towns.”
Twenty per cent of the riders are individual, with the rest riding as part of teams, including the returning Border Babes.
“It’s great to see groups join up and enjoy the fun ride together, because that’s what it is all about,” Carson said.
Following the ride, all participants will head back to Camooweal for dinner and refreshments to celebrate the money raised by the event.
“All riders will be done by 5pm and following their completion, riders are encouraged to come back to Camooweal and celebrate with each other and the supporters,” Carson said.
