As one of the main spectacles of the Curry Merry Muster, Kelly will have a big job on his hands this Friday and Saturday as a bull fighter.
But it was only five short years ago that he had ambitions to ride those bulls instead of chasing them around the arena.
“I sort of got into bull fighting by accident a couple of years ago at one of the rodeos in town [Cloncurry],” Kelly said.
“They were short on bull fighters on the day, so they asked me to give a helping hand
“Before I knew it, I was asked to bull fight at the Quamby rodeo the next weekend.”
Since then, Kelly has achieved it all, climaxing when he participated in the Pro Bull Riding Australian Championships.
“It’s been an awesome journey so far and it’s only been five years, so I’m hoping for it to only get better,” Kelly said.
While Kelly loves competing on the biggest stages, nothing compares to coming home to Cloncurry and fighting in front of his home fans.
“You can’t compare competing in front of your friends and family to any other arena,” Kelly said.
“Especially with the new arena they are unveiling this weekend, it’s going to be unreal.”
Kelly is expecting the biggest crowd ever this weekend at the Merry Muster festival, combining the 60th anniversary of the event with the new Cloncurry Equestrian centre.
“I’m assuming the crowds are going to be huge over both days of the rodeo, as people will want to check out the new arena first hand,” he said.
“Combine that with the anniversary and it should be the biggest Merry Muster to date.”
Rodeo action begins at 6.30pm Friday and 10am Saturday.
