Brisbane reached it's expected top of 28 degrees on Friday, with mostly clear skies rounding out the working week.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology website, the mercury reached 28.1 degrees in CBD at 12.59pm.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Andrew Bufalino said a trough pushing through Queensland, combined with westerly winds, was behind the sudden temperature spike.

He said the mercury would likely reach its maximum between 1pm and 3pm.

While sun worshippers may think Friday’s perfect conditions are signalling the end of winter, Mr Bufalino said there could still be some cold days ahead.

“We sometimes get some of the coldest daytime temperatures through August,” he said.

“It’s not until the end of August that temperatures suddenly switch and start to warm up. By September, spring’s here and the temperatures really do increase.”

The average maximum temperature in Brisbane during August is 21.8 degrees. The highest recorded August temperature was 32.8 degrees, which occurred in 1946.

The Gold Coast is set to reach 25 degrees on Friday, while it will be 26 on the Sunshine Coast.

In Brisbane, sunny conditions and a maximum of 21 are predicted for Saturday, before showers are forecast for several days next week.
