Officers had wanted to speak to the 38-year-old man over "police-related incidents'' when they attempted to approach him at the park on Thrower Drive in Palm Beach on Monday afternoon.
He then allegedly walked away and jumped into Currumbin Creek, attempting to swim across to the other side of the channel.
What followed was a 30-minute chase that involved Gold Coast lifeguards on jetskis and water police crews, a police spokesman said.
The spokesman said the man jumped in and out of the creek several times and eventually surrendered to officers “due to the temperature” of the water.
He was charged with one count of assault or obstruct police and is due to face Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
