Total reported offences are down 11 per cent on police service figures released by the government on Wednesday.

But taking into account all offences, not just those crimes reported but ones police bust themselves, total crime is down 2 per cent.

But speaking to Fairfax Radio 4BC Mornings, Mr Dempsey defended the 11 per cent figure and said any other reading of the figures was just "falling for a Labor philosophy"  and using "silly statistics" which punished proactive policing.

"It would mean that the more work the police do out there, protecting mums and dads in the community, it would mean that crime would be going up," he said.

"And that is where we get into silly statistics.

"... You know that statistics that you go through from detail to detail, I would prefer that we obviously made sure that people felt safer, that mums and dads, when little Johnny who works at uni, goes to work in the corner store, that he knows that robberies are down 19 per cent."

The battle started when the government, continuing in its mission to tell its "good news stories'' released figures showing "Queensland families are the safest they've been in half a decade", with the rate of reported offences, "dramatically down 11 per cent for the 2013-14 financial year".

The 11 per cent figure, is lower than the 15 to 30 per cent reduction senior government ministers were pushing not so long ago.

In response, the government said those figures related to particular crimes over a set period of time.

The 11 per cent figure released on Wednesday, refers to "reported offences" against "property and people" - meaning less offences are being reported, ergo, less crimes were being committed.

"The reported offences against property has dropped 11 per cent across Queensland, a reduction of almost 22,000 offences ... almost 2300 fewer cars have been stolen and there were more than 8000 fewer break-ins to homes and businesses, meaning more and more mums and dads can go about their day-to-day lives without fear of becoming a victim," the government's release said on Wednesday.

But that 11 per cent figure did not take into account all crimes.

Throwing in drug offences, prostitution, liquor, gaming and betting and other crimes, which are not necessarily reported but still make up "total offences'', the total crime reduction drops to 2 per cent, which is closer to the figure Fairfax Media found after a review of open data statistics in June.

But the government rolled on, with acting Premier Jeff Seeney and Mr Dempsey called to their feet several times during question time on Thursday to answer Dorothy Dixers on crime reduction in select government MP electorates.

Both Mr Dempsey and Mr Seeney were happy to report the "good news story" for those backbenchers.

It continued a strategy Premier Campbell Newman began on Tuesday as he recounted a breakfast conversation between himself and his wife.

"I was talking to my wife, Lisa, this morning and she reflected on how comforting it was to know that people who manufacture drugs, distribute those drugs and sell them in the community are being driven from this state," Mr Newman said in parliament on Tuesday.

"My wife was reflecting on the views of many women whom she speaks to, particularly women with children, who are so pleased that it is now harder to buy drugs in Queensland.

"The police minister might want to elaborate on this.

"It is harder and drugs have become more expensive. Why? Because the costs of doing business, the penalties of doing business in Queensland, have been raised for criminal gangs.

"That means that our kids are safer.

"They are less likely to be confronted in schools with someone trying to push drugs which could either seriously damage as a one-off or ruin their lives totally. It is important right now that we continue the fight."
