Police helicopter, Polair 2, which began operating on on July 1 and is based at Archerfield Airport, primarily covers Brisbane, Ipswich and Moreton Bay.

On July 31, the chopper crew located about 100 motorists gathered at the boat ramp off Wyampa Road at Bald Hills.

They captured footage of a car doing burn-outs and speeding.

Polair 2 then called in ground units to track the car and charge the driver.

Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said it wasn’t the first time Polair 2 had provided operational support.

“We’ve seen Polair 2 covertly monitor situations on the ground and gather evidence for prosecution,” Commissioner Stewart said.

“In one significant result Polair 2 helped monitor a vehicle being driven dangerously which led to the occupants being apprehended as they tried to steal another car from a woman at Capalaba on July 16.”

Police Minister Jack Dempsey said Polair 2 boosted the QPS’ capacity to respond to crime.

“In its first month of operation Polair 2 has flown 67 missions and more than 91 flight hours,” he said.

“It has been tasked to search for break and enter offenders, graffiti offenders, home invasion offenders, evade police offenders, criminal gang extortion offenders, as well as search for drug crops and missing persons.”

Polair 1 was launched late last year as part of the government’s election promise to put police helicopters in the sky

Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers said Polair 2 complemented Polair 1, which operated on the Gold Coast.

“It is good to see the fulfilment of the government’s commitment is having a positive effect for the jobs of police, and this vital asset assists them in their continual efforts to tackle crime,” Mr Leavers said.
