Standing on the side of the road, halfway between Maroochydore and Caloundra, Premier Campbell Newman and Transport Minister Scott Emerson were flanked by five ministers and the Speaker, all of whom hold seats in one of the LNP's safest regions.

With no less than 10 cranes in the background, where the Sunshine Coast University Hospital is sprouting, Mr Newman announced the first of the additional projects his government could move forward with - if the public voted it back in for a second term next year, thereby approving its asset sales agenda.

The plan involves $440 million of roadworks to upgrade the Mooloolah River Interchange and reduce congestion on two of the Sunshine Coast's main arterial roads, the Sunshine Motorway and Nicklin Way.

Mr Emerson, who has been playing the role of government attack dog during Transport Week, which so far has included an announcement on "Sprucing the Bruce", trains running on time and now the Sunshine Coast's potential road upgrade, said Labor's plan had included a "thought bubble" which would have cost $1.5 billion to deal with the same issues.

"It was never going to be affordable and therefore, never able to be delivered," Mr Emerson said.

"We've worked very closely with the team here on the Sunshine Coast to come up with a plan...a $440 million plan that does deal with the congestion issues, does deal with the extra demands created by the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, does deal with the with the expectations of people of the Sunshine Coast, that we will work to deliver."

But it is only possible if the government can push ahead with its asset sales agenda, which means a win at the next election.*

The Galaxy Poll published in The Courier-Mail on Monday showed three-quarters of the 800 respondents were against the selling of assets.

Mr Newman, appearing to practice for the upcoming campaign, said he wasn't a fan of the need to sell assets either.

"I've never been happy with the idea of some of these very important and strong decisions, but I know what I have to say, I am duty bound to say, that if we want great infrastructure in this state, if we want the roads, the hospitals, the schools, the community facilities that this state deserves, then we do have to make some of these strong choices," he said.

"We are not doing it for fun, we are doing it because it is the right thing to take Queensland forward."

Mr Emerson was quick to jump in: "And the important thing here, let's not forget, is Labor does not have a plan to deal with debt and deficit, it doesn't have a plan to deal with providing the kind of infrastructure the Sunshine Coast needs.''

"It has no plan, it created the problems, it never had solutions at all, we still don't hear solutions from Labor, they still have not put out a plan to deal with the economic problems that they created. They are silent on those kind of issues, they are silent on how they can deliver the kind of infrastructure we are talking about today."

While Tuesday's announcement had the look and feel of a campaign announcement, Mr Newman denied rumours the government was running a "dry campaign'' this week. However, one source described the week as a "dress rehearsal" for the election, designed to ensure the LNP executive and the parliamentary arm were "working well".

"We regularly conduct training and development of our staff and we conduct planning and development for our MPs as well, because we want to do a better job for Queenslanders. That is why we do these things,'' Mr Newman said.
