The group, believed to be three men in a 5.9-metre speedboat, ran out of fuel on Tuesday evening and contacted authorities.
Water police and the Townsville coast guard conducted a marine and helicopter search around Cleveland Bay but failed to find the group on Tuesday night.
Rescue crews resumed the search on Wednesday morning.
Police said the lost men made contact with authorities again on Wednesday, and the search would now centre around the Little Broadhurst Reef, about 100 kilometres from Townsville.
A vehicle and a trailer belonging to the men was located in Townsville on Tuesday.
