That was the chant today from around 300 students who marched through inner-city Brisbane today to continue the National Union of Students' national protest against the federal government's planned changes to university education.

Queensland's university students now believe the federal government will have to back down on its planned changes to university loans, fees and grants to university education.

Greens Senator Larissa Waters and Labor's Chris Ketter both told students they believed the government would have to back down next week.

"What's happened since the last rally is that it looks...likely we will actually have a win," Senator Waters said.

"It looks like The Greens are going to have enough support from the other political parties and it looks like we are able to block the de-regulation and the interest rate hike on the students loans," she said.

Senator Water said Greens leader Christine Milne had begun cross-bench negotiations this week.

She said those talks could also see the proposed 20 per cent cut to university grants - to be offset by increased fees - blocked by the cross-bench parties.

"It is a little unclear - but it looks like we will also be able to block the 20 per cent funding cuts to universities - which lead to the 30 per cent fee increases on courses."

Senator Ketter - who took his senate seat  from July 1 - said the government's higher education plans were "twisted and idealogical."

"Last week I was very pleased to get out to the University of Queensland and to Queensland University of Technology and the Central Queensland University to see what students had to say and to spread the word," Senator Ketter said.

"And to advise students of the Labor Party's position, which is to oppose all these unfair changes."

Student activist Kat Henderson fired-up the students in a passionate speech,urging them to continue their anger.

She was contemptuous of recently published comments from conservative politicians that poor people did not drive cars as far as rich people and that women don't study law and dentistry.

"Boo! 71 per cent of graduates in law are women and 68 per cent of people studying dentistry are women, (Christopher) Pyke" she said.

Ms Henderson said students should never underestimate their ability to influence policy.

"We put them there and we can bring them down," she said.

"And this is how you do it. You get out into the streets and you mobilise. Who is going to be able to go to university when degrees cost $100,000?"

Andrew Bonnell, from the University of Queensland's National Tertiary Education Union said it was important that students raised their voice against the changes.

"In the past, people going to uni were in the minority, they were kind of seen as a soft target by the government," Mr Bonnell said.

"But that's changed now. There are lots more families affected by these kinds of higher education cuts these days, so I think protesting and taking action has become more common."

Mr Bonnell said the proposed fee hikes could discourage students from being able to take up positions at regional campuses, which would effect their long-term viability.
